How to Make Your Holiday Cactus Bloom: Tips for a Thriving Schlumbergera

Updated: Nov 3

Secrets to a Blooming Holiday Cactus

Are you envious of seeing people's Thanksgiving or Christmas cactus bursting with blooms while yours is, as we like to say, BALD HEADED? Here's a secret!

During September, put your cactus outside if it isn't there yet. The temperatures are starting to dip, especially at night, but it isn't too cold just yet. The daylight hours are shortening too. These environmental shifts spur your holiday cactus to set buds for the upcoming season. I did it last year for the first time, and it worked like a charm!

Ideal Conditions for Your Cactus

We have a back stoop with an overhang, and that's where I chose to set mine. Within what seemed like days, small buds started to appear on the ends of the bracts (that's what their particular types of "leaves" are called), and they bloomed beautifully that season.

You can also cut back on your watering during this time. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is detrimental to your cactus. Instead, allow the soil to dry out between waterings. This practice encourages the plant to focus its energy on blooming rather than growing.

Identifying Your Schlumbergera

Lastly, did you know how to tell exactly which type of Schlumbergera (I swear! I'm not making that name up!) you have? By the bracts! Here's a clear and concise method to determine which type yours is.

Understanding the Different Types

There are several types of holiday cacti, including the Thanksgiving cactus and the Christmas cactus. Each has distinct features. The Thanksgiving cactus typically has pointed bracts, while the Christmas cactus has more rounded ones. Knowing the type of cactus you have can help you provide the best care.

Care Tips for a Thriving Cactus

  1. Light: Place your cactus in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.

  2. Temperature: Keep your cactus in a room that stays between 60°F and 70°F. This range is ideal for blooming.

  3. Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer during the growing season. This will help promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

The Importance of Dormancy

After the blooming season, your cactus will enter a dormant phase. During this time, reduce watering and stop fertilizing. This rest period is crucial for the health of your plant and will prepare it for the next blooming season.

Conclusion

Do check in and let us know if this tip worked for you! With the right care and attention, your holiday cactus can become a stunning centerpiece during the festive season. Remember, patience is key. Happy gardening!
